CHRIS MUÑOZ BIO:
Houston, Texas born Chris Muñoz got his first guitar at a thrift store at age 12. He started teaching himself how to play music by ear and jamming with his neighborhood crew, and gaining a rep on Houston’s tough Northside as the “guitar teacher”. HSPVA (High School for the Performing and Visual Arts), is where he got to study with some serious players, enjoying master classes from giants like Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner, Russell Malone, Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Harry Connick Jr. and Miles Davis sideman Dave Liebman. Liebman made a huge impression on Chris with his mastery of saxophone as well as drums and piano, he also introduced Chris to the sublime works of John Coltrane. The study of Coltrane was vital to Chris’ understanding of both the breadth, depth and ethos of what a musician could be. By his senior year at HSPVA Chris was playing guitar professionally on the Texas dancehall circuit and performing at big festivals and small gigs on the weekends, all while intensifying his studies of jazz and modern classical music during the week. In 1995 Chris moved to NYC to continue his music studies. This is where he was exposed to a wide and varied range of sound beyond jazz and classical from both the bands and DJ’s in NYC’s downtown scene. While working in and helping to open and run some of NYC’s and Miami’s biggest night clubs at the time, he was exposed to, inspired by and befriended some of the best DJ’s in the world. Fast forward to a decade later, he is a touring member of The Rapture, experiencing the full array of a major label touring band life and playing sold out shows on both N. American coasts> Soon after Chris began devoting more time and effort to studio and production work, learning the dynamics of working with both digital and analog production tools. In 2011 he released a 12” on pioneering NYC label Golf Channel Recordings under the moniker Heroes of the Galleon Trade. The record garnered positive reviews and got wide support from DJ’s like Harvey, Andrew Weatherall, and Gilles Peterson. Chris also began DJ’ing more at this time, building broad eclectic sets that reflected the varied scope of music he was passionate about. Chris played regularly at the infamous Passerby in NYC’s Meat Packing District and at Tropical Hotdog, a rooftop summer party at Brooklyn’s Studio B he helped organize with fellow Galleon Trader Anton Esteban. They had guests like Harvey, James Murphy and Tim Sweeney. The interest in DJ’ing and building complex sets bled into his interest in making dance music that remained true to his varied musical interests. As Chris moved further into studio production he created sound remixes for tracks by Spike, and Canyons, and he also began collaborating with his good friend Eric Duncan. Thier track Zona De Perigo was released on NAA records and subsequently appeared on DJ Harvey’s first Pikes compilation.
In addition to remix work and DJ’ing, Chris appeared as a session player on tracks by Bobbie Marie, Still Going, the Visitors (Dennis Kane/Sal Principato), and recently created an elegant soundtrack for a short film by Anton Esteban. New vinyl/digital record of the latest music produced, performed and composed coming out this fall 2022 on Chomp Chomp Records.
This is Chris’ debut Centered performance.
